here is a temperature gauge, a fertilizer something used to feed. plant plants. police got a call last night and -- used to fet the plants. police got a call last night. >> when officers got here, they found marijuana plants every where. and they are fully matured about 6 feet tall. about 250 of them with light systems and all kinds of other indicators that it was an indoor grow. >> police say this is a significant bust they say the street value is between $200,000, $250,000. they say this furniture appeared to be a front for a furniture store. we also went to the website

onlinefurniturebuy.com. but it comes up with a different san jose arrest. when i called -- address. when i called nobody answered the phone. we're also -- we also found out that there is a cannabis club across the street. but police say there's no connection to this marijuana grow operation. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. detectives are checking surveillance video at a safeway where five armed men robbed the checkout stands. the store is open now but it was closed closed overnight. officers say men stormed the safeway about 9:00 last night, emptied the registers in minutes and got away. one man we spoke to said the store is in a good neighborhood but there is a bad element.

clara county. county approval has been given to build the cordova center. the approval process has been controversial. look at this. although many support it, others say the plan to build a cemetery at that site could contaminate ground water. county supervisors say the center has passed every requirement. beginning march 1st, rvs will be banned from parking overnight in parts of san francisco. yesterday, the board of supervisors passed the ban on the vehicles, saying it was to help people get out of rvs and into temporary housing. but homeless advocates say this could force more people onto the streets. a complete list approved will be banned by the tsa and will likely include parts of the sunset and bayview district.

sexually assaulted on her way to school. authorities are searching for the man who grabbed her tuesday, put her in the truck, drove 30 miles, tied up her wrist and assaulted hemp. another motorist found her walking along the road and called police. the investigation continues into a terrifying shootout during the end of the commute on interstate 580 in castro valley. you can see bullet holes in this car. somebody in a passing car opened fire around 7:0 last night. the driver and -- 7:30 last night. the driver and passenger left the car on the side of the freeway last night and ran off. the driver of the other car got away. there are no reports of injuries or reports. the chp shut down two miles of westbound 580 for 90 minutes. causing a backup for ten miles while officers searched for evidence. the antioch police department is getting some help. the contra costa times reports at least six community officers

will be hired to handle things like booking, fingerprinting and transporting prisoners to jail. the city council approved the funds. still questions about san francisco's new graffiti cleanup program even though it seems to be working. a private company took over graffiti removal services last year. they say they cleaned up more than 33,000 graffiti works of art so far. however, some city officials say they are skeptical because of the actual cost of the cleanup program is almost $170,000 higher than originally predicted. now, supporters say the higher costs are offset by the graffiti-removing materials the city does not have to pay for. the pipeline disaster that happened two years ago in san bruno, the state has opened a new hearing on it.

parks department scandal earlier this year. authorities discovered $54 million that the state parks system kept hidden while asking cone donors for contributions to keep 70 marks from closing. a new jersey lawmaker wants to ban the nfl replacement referees from new jersey. steve sweeney says he will introduce a bill to prevent those refs from calling any pro sports events in new jersey. he's really angry about the final play monday night in the seahawks/packers game. at first the refs made two different calls on that game- deciding final play. the 49ers are playing the jets in new jersey this sunday. an i-care provider in wisconsin wants to help the referees who made that game deciding call. he wants to help them see more clearly. he's offering free lasik

surgery for those replacement refs who officiated the game. he said those officials obviously had some vision problems. so he wants to help out. back here at home, the san francisco giants say there are no plans to include melky cabrera on their postseason roster. he was suspended for 50 games, as you know, after that positive drug test on august 15th. now, he could be eligible to rejoin the giants during the national league championship series if the giants get that far. cabrera will be a free agent at the end of this season. all right. 7:22. it's been cool along the coast and folks there are asking if they will ever see the september warmup. up next, steve paulson will have the answer. and flames of san francisco recordkeeping and the mistake that's angering some. vo: for years, sacramento politicians have chopped away funds for our schools.

lab in 2009. the scandal forced hundreds of criminal cases to be dismissed. new this morning, the people of san francisco will soon be able to ride around the city in a new way. this morning, at 10:00, san francisco mayor ed lee will announce a new deal with a scooter company. yep. san francisco will be the home of the world's first network of shared electric scooters. now, at first, there will be about 50 of the scooters. scooter rides will cost about $5 an hour or $10 round trip. 7:26. are things going okay, sal? >> it's pretty typical which means it is slow out there. traffic getting into san francisco is going to be slow if you are driving into the city watch for slow traffic on

class begins at parkside elementary. security has been increased following the kidnapping and molestation of a student. ktvu's alex savidge is at the school to explain how educators plan to prevent future attacks. good morning, ail length. >> reporter: good morning. even though police have arrested a man in connection with this oncampus kidnapping. a lot of parents are still very worried. that's why san mateo police and the -- that's why san mateo police will be holding a meeting to talk about the criminal investigation and how the school is stepping up security. the assistant superintendent, i talked with her a couple of minutes ago she said right now the school is working to put locks on that lead to the campus. police say a 9-year-old girl on friday was kidnapped by a stranger from a school bathroom. she managed to escape. prosecutors have filed charges

against a 25-year-old man from san francisco, bradley mosak. investigators say he groped her, put his hand over her mouth and carried her off campus. she fought back and got away. the district will consider security changes and it's possible parents could have more limited access to the school. >> this is the community. this is the neighborhood school. parents -- parents walk to school and now we'll be asking them to visit in the sidewalk and the parking lot and the doors will remain locked. they will be abe to come on campus to get their children, just a few minutes to get -- before the bell rings. >> reporter: fry's kidnapping happened right as school was letting out -- friday's kidnapping happened right as school was letting out on friday. the suspect went to two other

schools and was harassing other students as well. parents will be gathering here for the safety meet at parkside school. back to you. >> thank you, alex. 7:33. a lawsuit filed by a walnut creek woman accuses of morago school district of turning a blind eye to sexual abus. she said she was sexually a -- abuse. she said she was sexually abused back in the '90s. she accuses a former principal, vice principal and superintendent of ignoring claims of sexual abuse and notifying the police. she said the school's failure allowed more to be abused.

this is a bittersweet day for the victim's family members. they told me they are expecting this teen driver to plead guilty in this his hearing today and even be taken into custody. but people may recall, he's not being charged as an adult in this case. pack in april, the 17-year-old driver was speeding along treat boulevard when he lost control and hit a father and his two daughters riding their bikes on the sidewalk. last month prosecutors charged the teen driver with vehicular manslaughter. he's still 17 so we're not naming him. now prosecutors say a guilty plea could mean the driver is lock under until he's 21. family members of the victims have made it a point to appear of a -- lock under until he's

items. items. authorities think one man has robbed at least two -- authorities think one man has robbed at least two banks. take a look at these pictures. this is the suspect at u.s. bank on lincoln avenue in san jose and at the u.s. bank in sunnyvale. investigators say he walked into the banks, demanded money and then ran away with the stolen cash. you see the pictures if you have any information, call san jose police. also, investigators believe that same man may have robbed the chase bank in los gatos. authorities say a white man in his 30s wearing a brown beanie white shirt and dark shorts, escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. witnesses saw the suspect get into a gold colored '90s sedan and drive away. local law enforcement officials are working with the fbi trying to solve this case. well, right now, a computer

hacker's group is attacking the u.s. bank website. we just tried to access the site. it's not loading. yesterday, that same group targeted wells fargo's website. now, the bank says the group slowed down their service but customer information, they say, was not compromised. last week that same group disrupted service on the bank of america and chase websites. these hackers say these attacks will continue until a video that they say insults the prophet muhammad is removed from the internet. 7:37. in election news, mitt romney is making his pitch to voters in the battle ground state of ohio today as he tries to boost his poll numbers. >> he said he can't change washington from the inside, only from the outside. well, we're gonna give him that chance to be on. outside on november 6th. romney was referring to comments made by president obama at a univision forum last

week. he also said his policies would do more to help middle-class families than the president's. he has two more stops in ohio today. and president obama will be campaigning in ohio this morning. he's expected to arrive in bowling green in with about one hour e will deliver remarks at bowling green state university. he will also be courting young voters at kent state university. there is a new poll showing president obama widening his lead over mitt romney. according to the poll in ohio, president obama leads mitt romney 53% to 4%. this is -- 43%. in florida, 53% of likely voters favor president obama while 44% favor mitt romney. in pennsylvania, president obama leads 54% to 42%. now, coming closer to home, in another case, a woman who is challenging dianne feinstein for her california u.s. senate seat is working hard to get her

it's a mixed open on wall street as investors are keeping an eye on europe with protesters in athens and madrid. we learned home sales dipped slightly from july. but the median amount sold to nearly $257,000. right now on wall street, the dow is currently down 4. nasdaq is down 34. s&p also down 4. meanwhile, sales of home improvement items are going through the roof according to a new ibm study. home depot reported its highest quart terly earnings in five years.

but moist sales are online according to the research. the report shows sales were up 30% in july and 26% in august. buying anything from paint to furniture outpaced back to school spending in september. 7:46. we have new details about the deaths today of two nato servicemembers in afghanistan. a report in the "l.a. times" says they were americans killed in a suicide attack in the eastern part of that country today. nato has not confirmed the nationallalities. back here at home, the san diego sheriff says he's cautiously optimistic about the recovery of two deputies hurt during a 15-minute shootout

yesterday. an oakland city councilmember is under fire for disrespecting the police department. according to the -- according to the tribune, rebecca capland said the officers accused of misconduct are like abusive catholic priests -- catholic priests who get shuffled from parish to parish. capland said there were a lot of people talking then. it was someone else who said that.

your car could soon be your own personal driver in just a few years. governor brown signed a bill into law yesterday, clear, the way for driverless cars to hit the road. the legislation allows testing of the cars on public roads with specially licensed drivers behind the wheel. it also paves the way for manufacturers to get permits to build and sell driverless cars. it will be a few years, though, before the cars are proven completely safe and reliable in traffic. a new jail planned for redwood city is still months away from being built. but critics are already protesting. county has no choice. they have to build this. >> there is a public safety issue. if people get arrest and convicted, someone has to house them and that's our role. but our role is also to make it humane. our facilities right now are really dilapidated. >> critics argue, though, the construction costs would be better spent on schools and preventive programs to keep people out of jail.

were seized. it took police hours to confiscate the plants from a business on charter park drive. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: there is a lot of technology companies around here. we found out that a lot of them thought this place was vacant. but just a couple of months ago, they say the tenant moved in. we're not sure how old the sticker is on the store. but police found hundreds of marijuana plants inside. just after 10:00 last night, police got a call from someone doing a maintenance check on the building off capital expressway. they discovered a large marijuana grow operation and called police. about ten officers responded an they found 250 mature marijuana

plants some as tall as six feet. they found an elaborate lighting infiltration system. people who worked nearby said they barely saw anybody go in and out. >> shocking. it's been very quiet. you know, very routine. that's -- that's mind blowing. >> reporter: police say this is a significant bust because they confiscated 50 pounds of useable product. they say it's a -- has a street value up to $50,000. it -- up to $250,000. it looks like this is a front for a furniture store. we went to the website onlinefurniturebuy.com and i called the phone number and nobody answered. we're not sure if that's tenant

in here or what's going on. but the narcotics unit will be following up. police in san leandro searching for the gunman who stunned safeway employees. police say they rushed the checkout lines around 9:00 last night stealing the cash and escaping. they were in and out within minutes. one man said that store is in a good neighbor but there is a bad element. well, ktvu's cameras caught the arrest of a man accused of

a carjacking in milpitas. the suspect was taken into custody yesterday afternoon. police say he stole a car at gunpoint from the home depot parking lot. now, police found that car at an apartment complex. then they arrested graves when he tried to run from the building according to police. they say he was found with a backpack that contained a loaded gun. it is 8:03. a hearing is scheduled for 2:00 this afternoon for the morgan hill man charged with kidnapping and murdering sierra lamarr. he could enter a plea today. although sierra lamar's body has not been found, he was arrested in may. investigators say they have dna evidence linking him to the teenager who disappeared in march while on her way to school. while volunteers continue on saturdays, the wednesday searches stopped this -- this

month. agents conducted a survey in an area along flood road in linden, east of stockton. mr.investigators are look -- investigators are looking for more victims in the shermantine murders. he's on death row. his partner in crime, herzog, committed suicide in prison. police found this car, it was riddled with bullets on the shoulder of 580 near castro little blast last night -- castro valley boulevard. the investigation shut down two miles of westbound 580 for about 09 minutes. the antioch police department is getting some help. they will be handling things like booking, fingerprinting

night over concerns the roof would collapse. we have new information about a story we first told but yesterday morning. the marin county district attorney's office now says it will not prosecute robert lockridge on poisoning charges. he was released from jail yesterday after the d.a. determined there was lack of -- there was a lack of evidence. the d.a. says this will explore other leads. the obesity epidemic here in america is not just a healthcare problem. it may not be a national security issue. there is a new study that says one in four in young adults are too overweight to join the military. renee marsh joining us live from washington, d.c. with -- rene marsh has more from washington, d.c. >> reporter: good morning, dave. according to this new study by mission readiness, this group

is made up of retired military leaders. they say that as you said, one in four young adults in america, they are simply too overweight to go to the front lines. the study also says that obesity is making it harder to find recruits and that active duty members who are not physically fit are more prone to injuries. mission readiness says being overweight or obese is the medical reason why adults cannot join the military. the group estimates that the department of defense spends about $1 billion each year to care for overnight active duty members, their families as well as veterans. so the group looking at schools to solve the problem. they say schools serve out some $400 billion calorie us of junk food every single year. that's the -- that's the equivalent of $2 billion candy bars. they are hoping it will start

county courthouse in martinez with more details. >> reporter: and dave, family members of the victims tell me they plan to be in the courtroom in the next 30 minutes to hear the teen driver in this case officially plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges. it's a big step forward in this family's effort to get some justice in the crash that killed a father and daughter. back in april, nuri was riding his bike along with his two daughters when police say a speeding cadillac suv on treat boulevard in concord lost control and crashed into the family on the sidewalk. nuri and his youngest daughter, 9-year-old odessa were killed. the 12-year-old survived. several months passed and police conducted -- conducted the investigation and finally recommended those vehicular homicide charges who was behinded -- who was behind the wheel. he originally pleaded not guilty but then his attorney said he would plead guilty and

prosecutors said they had no choice but to charge him as a juvenile. now, prosecutors have said even with niece juvenile charges that this teen could be locked up in a juvenile facility until he turns 21. the victim's family says they expect him to be taken into custody at the end of the hearing. we will bring you -- we will be here to bring you whatever happens. back to you. 8:31. later on today, a former san francisco human rights commissioner is due to the arraigned on child pornography charges. 66-year-old larry brinken was arrested last weekend after police say they found graphic photos of children on his computer. >> he was first relatived on similar charges back in june. but at that time, prosecutors didn't file charges. they said they needed more time to investigate. it happening now, a -- a safety meeting happening at a

school where a student was kidnapped and molested. alex savidge is live where you just talked to a parent attend egg the meeting. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. parents are anxious. one mom i talked to a few minutes ago said she contemplated pulling her son south of school. she's attending the safety meeting. it just got underway. you can see some parents just beyond us here who will be attending that meeting. the superintendent and san mateo police will be caulking -- will be talking about this campus kidnapping. they will be happening about how the school will step up security. locks are peaking -- are being put on all of the gates. parents could also have more limited time in pickups and dropoffs. the attacker groped the girl, put his hand on her -- over her

mouth and carried her campus. the district says this is a very unusual event. >> knowing how many people can be on campus, it's not that surprising. i think all of the san mateo schools are like that. >> i'm not that surprised. >> prosecutors have filed charges against a 25-year-old man from san francisco. he's the accused kidnapper and was arraigned yesterday on felony kidnapping charges. friday's event happened right as school was letting out in the you. that's why one of the idea will be to close the campus.

back to you. a 10-year-old is found in fresno after getting kidnapped and sexually assaulting on her we school. fresno authorities are looking for the man who grabbed the girl tuesday morning, put her in his truck, bound her wrists, assaulted her and the attacker drove away. the motorist saw her walking and called police. a woman in walnut creek is suing the morago school district saying officials ignored sexual abuse. she said she was abused by two middle school teachers back in the 1990s. the contra costa times reports the lawsuit accuses the former principal, the vice principal

and the school superintendent of ignoring claims of sexual abuse and not notifying police. pg&e says it is being made a scapegoat in the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. the blast two years ago killed eight people and destroyed 38 holes. the state has begun a new hearing, regulators accuse pg&e of violating regulations when it -- when it first installed the pipeline.

pg&e potentially faces millions of dollars in fines. 8:36. two men now recovering after being shot in san jose in what's be -- in what is believed to be a gang-related shooting. it happened in the area of poco way and sunset avenue in east san jose. police rushed to where gunshots were heard and then a short time later two men admitted themselves to the hospital with nonlife-threatening would you. so far no suspects have been arrested. a federal judge handed down an eight-year prison sentence in the corruption case against a former police officer turned private investigator. christopher butler seen in this video wearing that suit is one of several current and former law enforcement officers involved in the corruption scandal in contra costa county. in may, he pleaded guilty to seven charges including conspiracy to sell drugs, robbery and extortion. 8:37. sal's been telling us about the slow spots on the road.
